1861 Kansas was admitted as the 34th State in the Union (4 years old). 6

1861 – 1865 the American Civil War took place. Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and New York (any state with which William’s father had any affiliation) were all Union States. (4-8 years old) 6

15 April 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated (8 years old) 6

Civil War Pension Index lists a William M. Stone as leaving a widow, Rebecca Stone, in Missouri. His rank was a Private and his service was “10th Missouri Cavalry – Company I, 2nd Missouri Cavalry – Company M, E 9th Missouri Cavalry – Company E.” 7

19 July 1870 appears in the 1870 census with his mother, Rebecca, and sister, Jennie in Solomon Township, Cloud County, KS. Rebecca’s occupation was listed as “Keeping House”. The real estate value was $500. No one in the household could read or write, and neither Jennie nor William had been to school in the last year. (12 years old) 5

28 June 1880 appears in the 1880 census with his mother, Rebecca, in Saline Township, Ellis County, KS. William’s occupation was listed as “Farmer”. His father was deceased. Both William and his mother are listed as being able to read and write (24 years old) 1
