Catherine Ross

Catherine Ross has always been a mystery to me. She is my great great Aunt. Her mother, Magdeline "Ellen" Florence (Laughlin) Ross, died 31 January 1899, when Catherine was 9 years old from "lagrippe". She had just delivered a baby boy, William, who also died that day. In 1901, Catherine, her father, James,  her 7 brothers and 1 sister moved from Nemaha County, Kansas to Ellis County, Kansas.

On 15 April 1905, her sister, Marie Florence Stanton, aged 22 dies during childbirth. Later on, during that rough year, Catherine dies. I'm guessing her death was after October because her obituary lists her as being 16 and she was born 9 October 1889.

"Catherine Ross, age 16 years, died at her home in Buckeye township Tuesday. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Church."*Ross, James L., Descendants of Thomas Ross & Mary Ann McCormick, Prairie Village, KS, James L. Ross [7724 Pawnee, 66208], 1999.

There was no mention of how she died. My parents found her tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays, Ellis County, Kansas.

The Ross - Railroad Connection

Apparently railroading was a great love in the Ross family. My mother recalls her father, Albert James Ross Jr., as always wishing he could have worked for the railroad. When he was younger he worked for his father, Albert Thomas Ross Sr. on his farm in Ellis County, Kansas. Albert Sr. was kept promising to help him break into the railroad business if he worked for one more year. That year never came. My mother has memories of her dad taking her to the railroad station in Hays, KS to watch the trains come in.

Albert Sr.'s grandfather, Thomas Ross closely followed railroading and worked for the Chicago/Alton railroad when he lived in Bloomington, IL.

A wonderful volunteer at findagrave.com took a picture of my great-great-great grandparents grave. They were buried in Fidelity Cemetery, Nemaha County, Kansas.

Albert Ross and Rosa Lang's marriage certificate

The Russell County probate court issued this marriage certificate to my grandparents on May 10, 1938. It lists the groom as Albert James Ross of Hays, Kansas age 29 and the bride as Rosalia Lang of Ellis, Kansas age 24. They were married May 18, 1938 in St. Joseph's Church in Hays, Ellis County, Kansas by Reverend Father Valerian Brungardt.
