A commenter on this site (brentbiggs) helpfully pointed me to the Boston Pilot Information Wanted page, which is a database of advertisements for Irish immigrants. Apparently Luke Laughlin on the 16 of February 1856 posted an ad looking for his 3 brothers, Peter, Patrick, & Thomas. Luke lived in Brewer, Maine and him and his brothers came from "County Mayo, Parish Liskeevy, Townland Kilgevrin/Kilgiven, Barony Dunmoe, Poor-Law Taum".

Laughlins in Ireland

The Laughlin side of my heritage are rumored to have come from Aughagower, County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland.

Today there isn't much left in Aughagower. The total population is 875 people (2002 Census) and there are only a a few houses and pubs sprinkled in a beautiful pastoral setting. It is mostly known now for it's rich history.

There is remnants of a large medieval church and round tower that adjoins the graveyard. It dates to about 1000 A.D.

Magdeline Florence "Ellen" Laughlin's Tombstone

My great-great grandmother, Ellen Laughlin was born 23 June 1858 in Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas. She married James Ross on 27 January 1880 in St. Benedict, Nemaha County, Kansas. She gave birth to a little boy, William, on 27 January 1899. She died four days later on 31 January 1899 in Coal Creek, Nemaha County, Kansas from complications relating to childbirth. She was 40 years old. The little boy, William, died on the same day. She left behind her husband, James, and 8 living children.

She is buried in plot A, section 53 of the St. Patricks Cemetery, Nemaha County, Kansas. This photo was taken by K-B, a volunteer at findagrave.com. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers at Findagrave!

26 July 1870 census lists Luke (56), his wife, Mary (45), son, Patrick (18), daughters, Catherine (13) and Ellen (11). Luke is listed as a Farmer from Ireland. His real estate is listed at $800 and his personal estate at $300. They live in the Town of Mount Pleasant, Atchison Co., Kansas (56 years old). 5

1877 decided to quit stone masonry and become a farmer. He moved to Nemaha County, Kansas (63 years old) 1

19 June 1900 census lists Luke, born June 1814, his wife, Mary, born January 1825. They have been married 50  years. Mary is the mother of 6 children, 2 of whom are living. They both came to the US in 1850 and Luke is naturalized. 7
